Bernardaud Dish for Alain Ducasse – Gold Kintsugi

The art of the table, crossed with gold

Made by the Bernardaud porcelain manufacture for Alain Ducasse, this small dish combines the luminous whiteness of Limoges porcelain with a refined turquoise decoration. Alain Ducasse’s name appears at the centre, while the Bernardaud Limoges France mark remains visible on the reverse.

Once broken into numerous fragments, the dish was patiently reconstructed using the traditional Japanese art of kintsugi. Each piece was joined with natural urushi lacquer before the fracture lines were finished with pure 24-carat gold.

The golden veins move freely across the decoration, intersecting the chef’s signature and continuing onto the underside of the piece. Sometimes delicate and sometimes broader, they create a new and unrepeatable cartography. Rather than concealing the accident, the restoration reveals the time, patience and craftsmanship involved in bringing the object back together.

At the meeting point between Limoges porcelain, French haute cuisine and Japanese craftsmanship, this small dish has become a unique work of art. Through kintsugi, its fractures are transformed into an essential part of its decoration and history.
