Porcelain Plate with Floral Maki-e — Traditional Kintsugi with 24k Gold

A porcelain plate made by Atelier Entre Terres in Grazac, originally marked by a firing crack.

Rather than treating this kiln-born fracture as a flaw to be erased, the restoration uses it as the starting point for a floral maki-e composition. The line of the crack becomes the stem of the main flower, while finer botanical motifs extend across the surface.

The restoration was carried out according to the traditional kintsugi method, using natural urushi lacquer and 24-carat gold. The decorative work was then developed in maki-e, a Japanese lacquer technique in which gold powder is applied to create the motif.

Here, the original firing accident and the decoration are inseparable: the floral composition could only exist in this exact form on this particular plate.
