This Bizen stoneware vase has been restored using the traditional Japanese art of kintsugi, with natural urushi lacquer and 24K gold.
Its deep brown and charcoal surface, characteristic of Bizen ware, is created by the direct action of flame and firing rather than by glaze. Across this dark, mineral surface, the gold repairs form a striking composition: fine lines travel from the long neck down to the body of the vase, converging around a broader golden area that becomes the visual centre of the piece.
Rather than concealing the vase’s history, the restoration makes its fractures part of its new identity. The contrast between the raw, earthy ceramic and the luminous gold gives the piece an almost calligraphic presence.
A unique Japanese ceramic object, restored entirely by hand using traditional kintsugi techniques.
