A Japanese porcelain chawan in the tsutsu-gata form, finished with a grey-green ash-type glaze reminiscent of traditional hai-yū glazes.
The tall, cylindrical tsutsu-gata form is one of the classical shapes of the Japanese tea bowl. Its depth and relatively narrow opening were traditionally particularly suited to the colder months, helping the tea retain its warmth.
The bowl has been restored according to the traditional kintsugi method, using natural urushi lacquer. The joins were rebuilt and refined through successive applications of lacquer, with a curing period between each stage, before being finished with 24-carat gold. This meticulous process requires several weeks of work.
The gold follows the exact course of the fractures, without concealing or regularising them. Because the break is unique to the bowl, the resulting kintsugi can never be reproduced.
