Kintsugi and Hare’s Fur Glaze
This 25 cm tall ceramic vase is more than just a decorative object. It’s a work of art that tells a story of resilience. Broken and then restored using the ancient Japanese technique of kintsugi, each crack has been enhanced with 24-carat gold, celebrating its imperfection.
Its glaze, known as “hare’s fur,” is a true technical feat. It features fine, silky streaks of a deep blue that seem to flow down the ceramic. This effect, created by the crystallization of iron oxide during a very high-temperature firing, gives the glaze the soft, shimmering appearance of a hare’s coat.
A Touch of Wabi-Sabi
For a particularly large chip in the glaze, the restoration went beyond just gold. A piece of stabilized genuine bark was integrated, adding a unique texture and organic dimension. This touch of nature magnifies the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which celebrates the beauty of things that are imperfect, modest, and fleeting. The bark provides a superb contrast to the gleam of the gold, transforming what could have been a flaw into a feature and giving the piece an exceptional soul and charm.
