A black-glazed chawan in the wan-nari form, one of the classical shapes of the Japanese tea bowl, characterised by its full, continuous curve.
The bowl has been restored according to the traditional kintsugi method, using natural urushi lacquer. The joins were rebuilt and refined through successive applications of lacquer, with a curing period between each stage, before being finished with 24-carat gold. This meticulous process requires several weeks of work.
The gold follows the exact course of the fractures, without concealing or regularising them. As the break is unique to the bowl, the resulting kintsugi can never be reproduced.
