Japan, late 19th – early 20th century
Meiji to early Taishō period (c. 1880–1920)
An antique Japanese stoneware serving bowl featuring a hand-painted cobalt underglaze floral decoration beneath a softly crackled ivory glaze.
Its warm iron-rich clay, spontaneous brushwork, and subtle surface craquelure reflect the beauty of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Originally intended for serving food, the bowl has acquired a rich patina over time, telling the story of a life well lived.
The piece has been meticulously restored using the traditional Kintsugi technique, with natural Urushi lacquer and 24-karat gold. Rather than concealing the fractures, the golden lines celebrate them, transforming the bowl’s history into an integral part of its beauty.
Each restoration is carried out entirely by hand, following centuries-old Japanese techniques.
