A Japanese porcelain chawan in the sugi-nari (杉形) form, recognisable by its clean, gently conical profile, named for its resemblance to the silhouette of a cedar when the bowl is inverted.
The porcelain is decorated with a pale turquoise border and a delicate floral motif. The flower appears to be a stylised viola — most likely a violet or pansy — accompanied by its characteristic rounded green leaves.
The bowl has been restored according to the traditional kintsugi method using natural urushi lacquer. The fractures were progressively joined, rebuilt and refined through successive layers of lacquer, each requiring its own curing time, before being finished with 24-carat gold.
This restoration combines long, fine gold joins with a broader lacquer-built area where several fractures meet. The original painted decoration remains intact and the kintsugi follows the structure of the break rather than competing with it.
A maker’s mark is preserved on the underside of the foot.
