This Japanese stoneware vase has a distinctly handcrafted character, with its wheel-thrown form, softly flared rim and subtle grey-green glaze. Variations in colour, texture and firing give the surface a quiet, natural presence characteristic of Japanese studio pottery.
Once broken, the vase was restored using traditional kintsugi techniques with natural urushi lacquer and 24K gold.
One section of the restoration has been enriched with an iridescent lacquer whose colours shift between deep green, turquoise and violet. Its changing reflections evoke the metallic surface of a beetle’s wing, creating a striking contrast with the muted tones of the original stoneware.
The fine golden fractures and the luminous iridescent insert transform the restoration into an integral part of the composition, while preserving the simplicity and tactile quality of the original vessel.
A unique piece combining the understated character of Japanese stoneware with traditional kintsugi and a contemporary play of colour and light.
