Japanese Stoneware Wan-nari Chawan — Traditional Kintsugi with 24k Gold

A Japanese stoneware chawan in a rounded wan-nari form, finished with a soft cream glaze that appears consistent with an ash glaze.

The wan-nari form, with its generous curve and balanced proportions, belongs to the classical vocabulary of Japanese tea bowls. The stoneware body gives the piece a reassuring weight in the hand, while the glaze retains the subtle variations characteristic of high-temperature firing.

The bowl has been restored according to the traditional kintsugi method using natural urushi lacquer. The fractures were progressively rebuilt, filled and refined through successive layers of lacquer, with curing time between each stage, before the final application of 24-carat gold.

Here, the restoration required both fine joins and broader areas of rebuilding. The gold therefore varies naturally in width, following the exact structure of the break rather than imposing a regular decorative line. As with every traditional kintsugi restoration, the final pattern belongs only to this bowl and cannot be reproduced.
